Safety first

A swollen or punctured lithium battery can ignite. Do not press, bend, heat, or reuse a damaged battery.

Check your exact model

MacBook Air and MacBook Pro battery layouts, screw lengths, connectors, speakers, trackpads, and adhesive systems vary significantly by year and model. Find the model number on the bottom case and use the matching Apple repair manual before opening it.

9 steps

Repair instructions

Complete each step in order. Read cautions before touching the device.

01
Step 1 of 9

Identify the exact MacBook

Record the model number from the bottom case and confirm the screen size, year, and processor family. Obtain the matching repair manual, battery, screw map, and adhesive procedure before continuing.

CautionA battery that physically fits may still have an incompatible connector, voltage, mounting system, or firmware requirement.

Next step
02
Step 2 of 9

Prepare and reduce battery charge

Back up important files, let the battery fall below 25%, shut macOS down fully, unplug all accessories and power, close the display, and place the MacBook upside down on a clean padded surface.

CautionIf the case is bulging, the trackpad is lifted, or the battery smells unusual or feels hot, stop and move the device away from flammable materials.

Next step
03
Step 3 of 9

Map and remove the lower-case screws

Use the model-correct pentalobe driver and place each screw on a labeled map as it comes out. Note different lengths and locations. Release the lower case only in the direction specified for the model.

Technician tipNever assume all perimeter screws are identical. Returning a long screw to a short hole can damage internal components.

Next step
04
Step 4 of 9

Lift the lower case safely

Release clips gradually with a suction handle or plastic tool where the model manual permits. Lift only enough to confirm that no internal cable is attached to the lower case, then set it aside.

CautionDo not force the case near hinge clips. Some models require sliding the case before lifting.

Next step
05
Step 5 of 9

Disconnect the battery first

Locate the battery connector using the exact model diagram. Remove its shield or locking screw if present, disconnect it with a plastic tool, and position it so it cannot spring back into contact.

CautionAvoid metal tools around the logic board. Do not touch other connectors until battery power is isolated.

Next step
06
Step 6 of 9

Remove model-specific obstructions

Following the matching manual, remove only the components required to access the battery—such as speakers, trackpad cable, battery board fasteners, or shields. Photograph cable routing and keep every screw grouped.

Technician tipNever pull a connector by its cable. Release its latch and apply force to the connector body in the specified direction.

Next step
07
Step 7 of 9

Release the battery cells

Remove battery fasteners and release adhesive using the model-approved method. Pull stretch-release strips at a low angle when present. If approved solvent is required, protect surrounding parts, ventilate the room, and use only a small controlled amount.

CautionNever pry with metal, bend a cell, puncture the pouch, or apply heat directly to the battery. Adhesive remover may be flammable and may damage plastics.

Next step
08
Step 8 of 9

Clean and install the replacement

Lift the released battery without dragging it over cables or speakers. Remove adhesive residue with plastic tools and the approved cleaner. Dry the surface, align the new battery without pressure on its cells, and apply the specified adhesive.

CautionDo not connect power until the battery sits flat, cables are correctly routed, and no loose screw or tool remains inside.

Next step
09
Step 9 of 9

Reconnect, close, and verify

Reinstall removed components in reverse order, reconnect the battery last, inspect all connectors, and refit the lower case and screws in their original positions. Connect the proper charger, start the Mac, and complete the final checks.

Technician tipThe battery percentage or health estimate may need several normal charge cycles to stabilize. Follow any post-repair diagnostics or configuration required for the exact model.

Before sealing the device

Final checks

Battery recognized in macOS

Charging and adapter detection

Trackpad movement

Sleep, restart, and temperature

If a test fails, power the device off, disconnect the battery, and carefully reseat the relevant connector. Do not seal the display until every function passes.
